On 13 January 2026, PLATFORM WARS’ Marijn Hoijtink, together with Linde Arentze from the Realities of Algorithmic Warfare project, will deliver a lecture for the ‘Concerning War and Conflict’ series at Utrecht University on how the innovation and deployment of algorithmic military technologies in Ukraine are reshaping the relationships between technology, warfare, and society.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion, the battlefield in Ukraine has frequently been described as a testing ground for both military algorithmic technologies and the civil-military-industrial partnerships creating them. Western militaries and tech companies have rushed to the region, eager to test new systems and learn from Ukraine’s quick organisational and tactical adaptations. But what real lessons can we truly learn from Ukraine’s lived realities?

Marijn Hoijtink and Linde Arentze explore how AI and AI-adjacent technologies reshape how war is fought and experienced. They open up discussion on the long-term implications of the industrial, commercial, and civilian partnerships formed in response to war – for the future of Ukraine, the role of war in our societies, and the democratic principles underpinning it.
