In April, the PLATFORM WARS project was visited by Anna Nadibaidze, postdoctoral researcher at the Center for War Studies of the University of Southern Denmark (SDU). Anna is a well-known expert in the field of military AI and has a long record of researching norms, governance, and regulation in the context of Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems (LAWS) and AI Decision Support Systems (AI-DSS).
On day one, Anna gave a lecture for master’s students of International Relations & Diplomacy at the University of Antwerp. She outlined various military applications of AI and discussed the associated political, technological, economic, and ethical challenges. The students were highly interested, and a lively debate followed the talk.
On the second day, our PhD researchers met with Anna to present their research plans, share ideas, and receive feedback. Afterwards, Anna presented to us the new HuMach-project, in which she and her colleagues from SDU will explore the distributed agency of humans and machines in automated warfare, challenging common understandings of “responsible AI” in the military or the “human-in-the-loop” of LAWS.
We would like to thank Anna for her visit, the stimulating exchange, and fruitful discussions, and we look forward to following her current research and future outputs.
