On April 30th the PLATFORM WARS team welcomed dr. Daniel Møller Ølgaard from the Royal Danish Defence College to Antwerp, for a PhD workshop and a guest lecture for the master students of our International Relations and Diplomacy program.
In the lecture, dr. Møller Ølgaard addressed the influence of technology corporations involved in the business of war. He underlined that their power is not merely economic and infrastructural, but also ideological. Dr. Møller Ølgaard’s arguments resonated with the students, who engaged actively in the debate and asked critical and insightful questions.
During the workshop, PLATFORM WARS’ PhD researchers Martine Jaarsma, Fer Avar and Emma Caals presented their ongoing research, ranging from an analysis of Maven Smart System to knowledge production within the European drone security to NATO-Ukraine exchanges of practice. Moreover, Yiokasti Mouratidi, a PhD candidate at the Swedish Defence University and former guest researcher at PLATFORM WARS, presented her work on the linkage between international humanitarian law, (responsible) military AI and private industry. Finally, Daniel Møller Ølgaard talked about his ongoing research on the use of generative AI tools by military personnel. All presenters received feedback by PLATFORM WARS PI Marijn Hoijtink and postdoctoral researcher Robin Vanderborght.
