Members of the PLATFORM WARS team took part in the 18th Pan-European Conference on International Relations (EISA) this past August in Bologna to present their work and exchange ideas with colleagues from all over the world.
Marijn Hoijtink served as chair of “Global Digital Governance: Rethinking Sovereignty, Regulation and Migration”, spoke at “ECD's IR Cafe on Research Methods at EISA-PEC Special”, was a discussant of “(Dis)information, Algorithms, and Platform Hegemonies”, presented a paper at the panel “The 'Tragic Necessity' of Militarization: A Critical Engagement”, titled “A Brave New Tech War? Between Tragedy Talk and Redemption,” and participated in a round table at the panel “Big Tech Companies in International Politics”.
Jasper van der Kist served as a paper presenter at the panel “A New Military-Industrial Complex: Exploring the Intersection(s) of Technology Corporations and Military Affairs in a Changing World Order,” where he discussed: Defence Tech Hackathons and the Multivalence of Prototype Warfare. He also presented at the panel “Calculative Politics of Boundaries and International Mobility,” on The Calculative Politics of Resettlement: Experiments with Refugee Matching Algorithms.
Martine Jaarsma was a paper presenter at the panel “Algorithmic Violence and Responsibility: Innovation, Deployment, and Impact”, presenting "Who is a Combatant? AI-DSS, the Principle of Distinction, and the Construction of the Combatant."
Fer Avar was a paper presenter at the Early Career Workshop on “Geopolitics of AI Governance: Actors, Norms and Trends,” where she presented What Does It Take to be a Defense Expert for the EU? Constructed Expertise, Deterrence Through Abstraction, and ReArming Europe, and served as discussant for the panel “Algorithmic Violence and Responsibility: Innovation,Deployment, and Impact.”
